The United Kingdom will provide Ukraine with a new military aid package worth £1.6 billion. This funding will support the production of 5,000 air defense missiles, stated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, as reported by The Guardian.
Starmer announced that in addition to the £2.2 billion loan declared yesterday, Britain is offering another £1.6 billion in export financing to Ukraine. With this funding, Kyiv will be able to "purchase over 5,000 air defense missiles." The missiles will be manufactured in Belfast, UK.
"This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure now and strengthening Ukraine in ensuring peace when it comes, because we must learn from the mistakes of the past. We cannot accept a weak agreement like 'Minsk' that Russia can easily violate," said Starmer.
The British leader is convinced that providing Ukraine with "as strong a position as possible" will enable negotiations with the Russian Federation from a position of strength, which is why "we are doubling our support."
According to the British head, European leaders have also agreed to increase economic pressure on Russia, and they will insist that Ukraine must be at the table for any peace negotiations.
At the same time, London intends to gather a "coalition of the willing" that will ensure the implementation of any peace agreement. Britain plans to take a leading role in this coalition.
"We will build a coalition of the willing to safeguard the agreement in Ukraine and guarantee peace. (...) The United Kingdom is ready to support this with boots on the ground and planes in the air along with others," he stated.
Starmer noted that "several countries" are ready to join the coalition of the willing, but they should announce this independently.
Ukrainian Summit in Britain
As reported by UNIAN, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte described the Ukrainian summit in London as a "good meeting" and announced new military aid packages that summit participants will declare independently. According to him, Europeans also want to prevent future aggression from the Russian Federation.
Additionally, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Europe must turn Ukraine into a "steel porcupine," so that the Russian Federation cannot swallow it. She also emphasized the need for post-war guarantees for Ukraine.
