One year ago, the President of France opened the "Overton Window" regarding the potential presence of NATO member troops on Ukrainian territory. According to Alliance doctrines, the deployment of ground forces requires support from air and naval forces.
This was discussed on the air during a telethon by people's deputy and Deputy Chairman of the Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence, head of the permanent delegation of Ukraine to the NATO PA, Yegor Chernev. He does not rule out a "multidomain approach" concerning peacekeeping contingents:
"This is when troops are utilized in conjunction with satellite data, artillery, aviation, and even naval forces that provide coverage with medium-range missiles during offensive or defensive operations."
Chernev mentions that since 2022, nothing can be ruled out regarding support for Ukraine, as the country has repeatedly believed it would not receive Patriot, ATACMS, and F-16, yet it did receive them. In his view, this time it is necessary to start with a ground contingent.
The deputy also believes that the position of French leader Emmanuel Macron is, to some extent, coordinated with the United States. He recalled that the issue of deploying foreign troops in Ukraine resurfaced on the agenda following Trump's visit to the newly renovated Notre-Dame de Paris and his meeting with Macron.
"For us, this is also a certain guarantee that the Russian Federation will not initiate a new wave of aggression, as it would then face the contingents of NATO member countries," emphasized the deputy.
Foreign Troops in Ukraine
It should be noted that the initiator of sending foreign contingents to Ukraine is French President Emmanuel Macron. This could serve as a certain European guarantee that Russia will not launch a new attack.
Recently, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky reported that he discussed with Macron the deployment of military contingents and the possible involvement of other countries in the process.
