Pope Francis, who has been in the hospital for a week, experienced a prolonged asthmatic respiratory crisis, and his condition is described as critical. This information was reported by the press service of the Vatican.

The 88-year-old Pope has been hospitalized for a week due to pneumonia and a complex lung infection. After tests revealed a low platelet count associated with anemia, he received a blood transfusion. Now, during the asthmatic crisis, he requires high-flow oxygen.

"The Holy Father remains vigilant and spent the day in a chair, although he felt more pain than yesterday. At this moment, the prognosis remains unchanged," the statement said.

Pope Francis's doctors believe he will need to stay in the hospital at least until the end of next week. They emphasized that Pope Francis is "not in danger of death," but he is also not completely "out of danger."

They warned that the main threat the head of the Catholic Church may face is the development of sepsis, a serious blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia. However, this has not occurred so far.

Amid the Pope's health issues, Vatican officials are working to dispel rumors that Francis is considering resignation due to his inability to fulfill his duties as the leader of all Catholics.
