The agreement on the extraction of minerals may be signed by Ukraine and the USA as early as today.
This was reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing its own sources. "The agreement could be signed as soon as Saturday, although it is not yet finalized," the sources stated. However, no further details were provided.
The WSJ article notes that a source close to the Ukrainian government indicated that special representative of the USA for Ukraine and Russia, Kurt Volker, played a "significant role" in negotiating the terms of the agreement, "building trust with Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials during a three-day visit to Kyiv."
Mineral Extraction Agreement
Yesterday, Axios reported that American and Ukrainian officials spent the entire night until Friday morning discussing the terms of the agreement, striving to reach a consensus and avoid deteriorating relations between Ukraine and the USA.
White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz announced that Zelensky would soon sign the mineral extraction agreement. Zelensky himself expressed hope for a fair outcome of the agreement between the USA and Ukraine in his evening address yesterday.
Today, Reuters reported that the USA may deny Ukraine access to the critical satellite internet system Starlink in order to compel the signing of the mineral extraction agreement. According to the publication, this threat has been mentioned twice, including during a meeting between the White House special representative for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, and Zelensky.
