The loss of territories by Ukraine due to the aggressive war initiated by Russia may be recorded in a peace agreement. However, this will not signify official recognition of these territorial losses, stated Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Kit Kellogg.

"They will not return to the borders of 2014, the borders they had before Russia entered Crimea. I think there will be some kind of agreement regarding potential territorial losses. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be recognized – we didn’t do that with the Baltic states," he explained during an appearance on Fox News.

Kellogg reminded that when the USSR annexed the territories of the Baltic states, the United States never said that the Soviet Union "owned" them. The discussion was that they were simply under the domination of the USSR.

Speaking about the war in Ukraine, he noted that the issue of territories should be viewed in the long term, but "this is part of the negotiations."

"A real stable peace is needed, which is actually guaranteed in terms of having a security agreement among all parties that is long-term and very, very sustainable. A lot will depend on the Europeans here. This is happening in their backyard, so it is in their interest to address it," added Trump’s special envoy.

The War in Ukraine and Trump

On February 12, the US president had a phone conversation with Russian dictator Putin, after which Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Western media have already begun to suggest that this move could indicate a "surrender" of Ukraine.

Moreover, media reports indicate that the issue of ending the war in Ukraine might be resolved without the participation of Ukraine (and Europe). In particular, attempts by the US president to engage in direct dialogue with the Kremlin over the heads of Ukrainians and other Europeans have raised concerns in the UK. Europe has seen the actions of the American president as a specter of the Munich conspiracy of 1938.

Thus, a source from the UK Ministry of Defense stated that "the Ukrainians did not fight for three years, losing their sons and daughters, just to be excluded from discussions about their future." According to him, if he were in Ukraine's position, he would convey to Trump "the same message as those who were on Snake Island" (referring to the phrase about the "Russian warship").
