The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is likely to visit Moscow on May 9 and participate in the celebratory events. This information comes from the French magazine Le Point, citing its own sources.
The publication highlights that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in Europe. Therefore, the presence of the U.S. president at the Moscow celebrations is expected to serve as a kind of endorsement of the narratives put forth by Russian propaganda, which equates Ukraine with the Nazis. In other words, 80 years after the victory over German Nazis, Putin wants to commemorate a "victory" over other Nazis, the authors of the article point out.
Such a visit by a U.S. president to Moscow actually has precedent, according to the French publication. In 1995, Bill Clinton accepted an invitation from Boris Yeltsin and participated in the May 9 celebrations in Moscow, despite the existing disagreements between the U.S. and Russia over Bosnia, Iran, and NATO expansion at the time.
"On May 9, 2025, if a new U.S.-Russia agreement is reached and nothing prevents Trump’s invitation, Europeans will symbolically raise their glasses to the ground as they watch the parade of Russian troops on their screens, saluted by the American president," writes Le Point.
Trump's Attitude Toward Russia
As reported by UNIAN, following a phone call with Vladimir Putin last week, Donald Trump stated that he "believes" the assurances of the Russian dictator that he supposedly wants peace with Ukraine. However, Trump did not specify what exactly prevents Putin from ending the war that he himself started.
Today, Trump stated that Putin could have taken over all of Ukraine if he wanted to. In Trump's view, the fact that Russia has not yet occupied the entirety of Ukraine supposedly confirms Putin's desire to reach a peace agreement.
