On Sunday, March 2, a summit of European leaders will take place in the United Kingdom, providing an opportunity to advance towards a "fair and lasting peace in Ukraine."
"The Prime Minister reiterated his unwavering support for Ukraine this weekend and his determination to find a way forward that will end Russia's illegal war and ensure a lasting peace for Ukraine based on sovereignty and security," stated a press release from the British government.
At the summit in London, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet with leaders from various European countries, including heads of the European Union and NATO. Leaders from France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Romania are expected to attend. The summit will also feature the Turkish Foreign Minister, NATO Secretary-General, and Presidents of the European Commission and European Council.
"The Prime Minister has made it clear that there can be no negotiations about Ukraine without Ukraine itself," as confirmed by warmly welcoming President Zelensky to Downing Street on Saturday evening ahead of the summit," the statement noted.
The leaders at the summit will focus on the following issues:
- Strengthening Ukraine's position at present – including ongoing military support and increasing economic pressure on Russia.
- The necessity of establishing a robust long-term agreement that will ensure lasting peace in Ukraine and guarantee that Ukraine can deter and defend itself against future Russian attacks.
- Next steps in planning reliable security guarantees.
"In partnership with our allies, we must ramp up preparations for a European element of security guarantees, while continuing discussions with the United States. We have the opportunity to unite to secure a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine that will ensure its sovereignty and security. It is time to come together to guarantee the best outcome for Ukraine, protect European security, and secure our collective future," stated Keir Starmer.
Ukraine Summit in Britain
Several days ago, Bloomberg reported that European leaders would meet in the United Kingdom to discuss the war in Ukraine and defense matters.
It was later revealed that UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer would welcome Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders in London on Sunday, March 2.
Zelensky was expected to arrive after signing a mineral agreement in the United States. However, the meeting at the White House ended in a dispute, and the Ukrainian leader left Washington. The UK, along with several other European nations, expressed support for Ukraine and Zelensky. On the afternoon of March 1, the President of Ukraine arrived in London.
