The origin of the name of the Ukrainian currency is reported by Holvpost.

Origin of the word "hryvnia"

The history of this word dates back to ancient Rus times. In the Middle Ages, in Kievan Rus, the term "hryvnia" referred not only to a coin but also to various items used as money or means of exchange. Initially, "hryvnia" was the name of an important part of jewelry—gold or silver colored metals worn around the neck as ornaments or used as a medium of exchange. This word is also the root of the modern Ukrainian term "hryvnia," which denotes the unit of national currency.

Why "hryvna" is incorrect

Linguist Oleksandr Avramenko points out that the term "hryvna" should be forgotten when it comes to money.

"Remember: 'hryvna' is an ancient accessory in the form of a hoop, primarily made of gold. When discussing money, it is correct to say 'hryvnia.' By the way, even in Russian, the term used is 'hryvnia,' not 'hryvna,'" explains Avramenko.
