Professional trainer Sam Hawk shared that the command "Place" is one of the most effective ways to distract a dog and reduce its activity level. This exercise not only teaches the pet to respond calmly to situations but also builds its self-confidence.
To start, the trainer recommends setting up a designated area for the dog, such as an elevated bed with a clearly defined zone. Every time the dog goes to this spot, it should be rewarded with a treat.
"It's important for this process to become a habit," notes Hawk.
Once the pet confidently uses its space, the verbal cue "Place" should be introduced, which will serve as the basis for the command. With each repetition, the dog will better understand what is expected of it.
After the dog masters the basic skills, Hawk advises gradually increasing the difficulty of the task. Now, treats are only given for calm behavior. Additionally, it’s important to enhance eye contact with the pet to strengthen the emotional bond.
Over time, distracting factors such as noise or movement should be introduced to prepare the dog for real-life situations. This training system not only helps to quickly calm the pet but also improves its discipline.
