Simona Brambilla, born in 1965 in northern Italy, trained as a nurse. In 1988, she joined the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Mother of God, Consoler, and made her first vows in 1991, which became lifelong in 1999. Following that, she went on a mission to Mozambique.
Sister Simona also holds a doctorate in psychology, which she earned at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where she later taught. From 2011 to 2023, she served as the General Superior of her congregation. In October 2023, she was appointed Secretary of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
In her new role, she will succeed Cardinal João Braz de Aviz, who is retiring. The dicastery she will lead oversees all Catholic religious orders, including well-known ones like the Jesuits and Franciscans, as well as the Sisters of Charity and smaller religious movements.
This appointment symbolizes significant changes in the governance of the Catholic Church, reflecting the Vatican's commitment to a more inclusive approach. The reform of the constitution of the Holy See has been a key step towards modernizing the Church, enabling women and laypeople to occupy crucial positions within the religious hierarchy.
