Valentine's Day, recognized as a celebration of love and romance, is observed in many countries, though the traditions associated with it can vary significantly. While in most countries it is customary to give flowers, chocolates, and cards, some parts of the world have quite unusual customs tied to this day.

This is reported by Glavpost.

1. Japan: Men await gifts from women

Unlike Western countries, in Japan, gifts—primarily chocolate—are given by women on Valentine's Day. There are two types of chocolates: "giri-choco," a symbolic gift for colleagues, friends, and bosses, and "honmei-choco," intended for a loved one. Men are expected to reciprocate this attention a month later, on March 14, during the so-called "White Day."

2. South Korea: Black Day for singles

In addition to Valentine's Day and White Day, South Korea celebrates another unusual holiday on April 14—"Black Day." On this day, those who did not receive gifts in February or March gather together to eat "jjajangmyeon," noodles with black sauce, symbolizing their singleness.

3. Denmark: Anonymous love letters

In Denmark, instead of the usual cards, it is customary to send anonymous letters called "gaekkebrev." These are romantic notes written in verse. The sender leaves only a few dots in place of their signature, and the recipient must guess who sent the message. If a person guesses correctly, they receive a chocolate egg as a gift on Easter.

4. France: Once held a "lottery of love"

In the past, France had an intriguing tradition known as "la loterie d'amour"—the "lottery of love." Single men and women would gather in homes and randomly choose partners. If a man was unhappy with his choice, he could leave the woman, after which those left without partners would burn portraits of their former suitors. Due to the intense emotions involved, this custom was banned by the French authorities.
