In Kyiv, there has been a decrease in bicycle traffic for the first time in five years, indicating a decline in the number of people choosing to travel around the city by bike.
1 These findings are from a study by the Kyiv Cyclists Association.
“The number of cyclists in Kyiv has decreased by 28% on weekdays and by 17% on weekends,” the organization stated.
2 According to their analysts, when comparing the cyclist count results from 2024 to those from 2022, the decline is quite significant. This trend may be attributed to external factors such as air raid alerts, which affect a bicycle owner's decision to ride or not, vacations, and changes in the research methodology. However, weather conditions do not influence the reduction in bicycle traffic.
3 4 It has been found that 57 percent of Kyiv cyclists prefer riding on sidewalks, 31-37 percent use roads, and 6-12 percent utilize the city's cycling infrastructure.
