The toughest fight of his career: 7 years ago, Usyk defeated Briedis.

Seven years ago, on January 27, 2018, one of the most memorable fights in Oleksandr Usyk's career took place in Riga. In the semifinals of the World Boxing Super Series, he faced the undefeated Latvian fighter Mairis Briedis. This match will forever be etched in history as one of the toughest and most intense battles for the Ukrainian champion.
Самый сложный бой в карьере: 7 лет назад Усик одержал победу над Бриедисом.

At the time of the match, Usyk was already the WBO heavyweight champion, while Briedis held the WBC title. Both boxers were in peak condition and eager to prove their dominance.

From the very first rounds, it was clear that the Latvian was aggressive and ready to impose his style. His powerful punches and relentless pressure posed significant challenges for Usyk, who appeared cautious and somewhat uncertain. This was part of the Ukrainian's strategy. Usyk gradually studied his opponent, showcasing his incredible technique and stamina.

In the middle of the fight, Oleksandr began to act more actively, utilizing footwork and precise combinations to score points. Briedis, on the other hand, did not back down, attempting to engage in close combat where his physical strength could provide an advantage.

The final rounds were a true test for both fighters. The audience in the arena and millions of fans watching on screens witnessed a dramatic battle where every punch could determine the outcome.

After the final bell, the judges were divided in their opinions, but the victory was awarded to Usyk by a narrow margin. He claimed the WBC title, unifying the belts, and continued his journey towards undisputed championship status.

This fight marked a turning point in Usyk's career not only due to the titles won but also because of internal changes within his team. Following the tough victory, he parted ways with his friend and long-time trainer, Sergey Vatamaniuk, with whom he had worked at the start of his professional career. Anatoly Lomachenko, Vasyl Lomachenko's father, took over as the head coach. Under his guidance, Usyk prepared for the WBSS final, where he claimed the title of undisputed champion.
