Poland has extradited a suspect involved in a fatal car accident to Ukraine.

Poland has extradited a Ukrainian citizen suspected of causing a fatal traffic accident in the Khmelnytskyi region.

This was reported on Monday, January 13, by the press service of the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Following the review of the request from the Office of the Prosecutor General, the competent authorities of the Republic of Poland decided to extradite the Ukrainian citizen, who was wanted by law enforcement in the Khmelnytskyi region for prosecution related to the fatal traffic accident.

The suspect was handed over to Ukrainian law enforcement on January 9 at the international checkpoint "Ustyluh-Zosin."

According to the investigation, the extradited individual is a resident of the Kamianets-Podilskyi district, who caused a traffic accident near the village of Medzhybizh in July 2023. Road repairs were being conducted on the highway at that time.

The driver, operating a Volkswagen Transporter, failed to respond to warning signs, left the roadway, and struck a worker who was performing road work. The victim succumbed to injuries at the scene.

The man was informed of the suspicion of violating traffic safety rules by a person operating a vehicle, resulting in the death of the victim (part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), and a measure of restraint in the form of night house arrest was chosen. However, the suspect evaded the pre-trial investigation authorities and fled to the Republic of Poland, which led to his international search.

The suspect is currently in custody.

The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the investigative department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Khmelnytskyi region.
