Juvenile prosecutors from the Ternopil Regional Prosecutor's Office secured a prison sentence for the driver who, while intoxicated, ran over a child and left him without assistance.

Prosecutors demonstrated in court that on February 10, 2024, the accused, while under the influence of alcohol and lacking a court-ordered driver's license, was operating his own technically sound "FORD SIERRA" vehicle when he struck the minor.

The boy was walking along the roadside in the village of Molotkov, Kremenets District, Ternopil region. The victim sustained a traumatic brain injury and other injuries classified as serious bodily harm.

After hitting the boy, the driver fled the scene, leaving the victim in a life-threatening condition.

The Shumsk District Court found the driver guilty but imposed a lenient sentence under Article 69 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, restricting his freedom for 2 years and revoking his right to drive for 5 years.

Juvenile prosecutors appealed the verdict due to its leniency. The Ternopil Court of Appeals agreed with the prosecution's position, overturning the first-instance court's decision and imposing a harsher penalty on the offender – 4 years of imprisonment and revocation of his right to drive for 5 years.

The court's ruling has come into legal force, reports the press service of the Ternopil Regional Prosecutor's Office.
